Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste of one of members of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. The actress is well-known for her role in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009).
